Discover more about Exotic Garden of Monaco

The Exotic Garden of Monaco, inaugurated in 1933 under Prince Louis II, is a unique botanical garden showcasing an impressive array of succulent plants. Situated on a cliffside, it provides visitors with panoramic views of the Principality and the Mediterranean Sea. The garden is home to over a thousand species of succulents, including cacti and agaves from the southwestern United States, Mexico, and Central and South America, as well as other succulents from South Africa, East Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula. The plants have adapted to the arid climate and produce flowers throughout the year, with peak blooming seasons in winter and spring. The size and maturity of the plants are remarkable, with some specimens dating back over a century. In addition to the exotic flora, the garden also features the Observatory Cave, a prehistoric cavern with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Guided tours take visitors down into the cave, revealing its geological formations and providing insights into the region's prehistoric past. Bones of animals eaten by prehistoric humans have been found in the cave, offering clues about climate change over the last 250,000 years. The Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology, located near the garden, displays artifacts discovered in the cave and the surrounding area. Currently (July 2025), the Exotic Garden is undergoing renovation and is scheduled to reopen in the summer of 2025. However, the Botanical Centre at the Exotic Garden is open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday, 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, with free admission.
