Discover more about Princess Grace Japanese Garden

Nestled on Avenue Princesse Grace in Monaco's Larvotto ward, the Princess Grace Japanese Garden offers a tranquil escape inspired by Shintoist philosophies. This 0.7-hectare (1.7 acres) garden was created in 1994 at the request of Prince Rainier III, fulfilling Princess Grace's wish for a Japanese garden in Monaco. Landscape architect Yasuo Beppu, a winner at the Osaka Flower Exhibition, designed the garden as a miniature representation of Japanese culture. The garden incorporates essential elements of a Japanese garden, including a pond with Koi fish, a waterfall, islands, stone lanterns, bridges, a tea house, and a Zen garden designed for meditation. Many materials, such as bamboo hedges, tiles, stone lanterns, and wood for the structures, were imported from Japan. Mediterranean plants like pine, olive, and pomegranate trees were cultivated in the Japanese style. The garden's design adheres to strict Zen principles, offering visitors a serene space that blends Japanese tradition with the Mediterranean environment. Located next to the Grimaldi Forum convention center, the garden provides a green oasis amidst Monaco's urban landscape. It's open to the public and offers free admission, inviting visitors to explore its winding paths, admire the meticulously arranged landscapes, and experience the harmony between nature and design. Each year, Mr. Beppu returns to share his expertise with local gardeners.
