Discover more about Jardin Animalier de Monaco

Nestled on the southern side of the Rock of Monaco in the Fontvieille district, the Jardin Animalier offers a unique blend of wildlife and stunning views. Established in 1954 by Prince Rainier III, the zoo began with animals he brought back from an African trip. Today, it continues its mission to care for and protect animals in distress. Unlike traditional zoos, the Jardin Animalier's residents are all donated, rescued, or seized by customs. This ethical approach provides a second chance for mistreated or endangered animals. The zoo is home to around 300 animals representing approximately 60 species, including exotic birds, reptiles, primates, lemurs, and farm animals. One of the most beloved residents is Pollux, the hippopotamus, who arrived in 1986 and has become a mascot of the zoo. The zoo spans one hectare across four levels on the Rock of Monaco. The park also features picnic areas and shaded spots where visitors can relax. The terraced design allows for panoramic views, making it a picturesque spot for photography.
