Nestled on the southern flank of the Rock of Monaco, overlooking the Fontvieille port, the Jardin Animalier offers a wild escape in the heart of the Principality. Established in 1954 by Prince Rainier III, the zoo is home to around 300 animals from 60 different species. Unlike traditional zoos, the Jardin Animalier does not purchase its animals. Instead, it serves as a sanctuary for creatures that have been donated, abandoned, or rescued. This ethical approach provides a second chance for animals that have often been mistreated or are in danger. The zoo is built on multiple levels along the rock face, offering varied habitats for its residents. Visitors can observe exotic birds, turtles, caimans, hippos, reptiles, primates, and lemurs. A highlight for many years was Pollux, the hippopotamus, who arrived in 1986 and became a beloved figure. Recent additions include animals from a local animal shelter, such as a peacock and a blue-fronted amazon.
