If you are driving from the Golden Triangle area, head southeast on Route 1 towards the border of Thailand. Continue for approximately 20 kilometers until you reach the town of Sop Ruak, where you will find the confluence of the Mekong and Ruak Rivers. The coordinates for Ruak are approximately 20.4227° N, 99.9866° E. Follow the signs directing you to the riverfront area, where you will be able to see Ruak. Parking is available near the riverfront, but be cautious of local regulations.
Public Transportation
To reach Ruak via public transportation, you can start by taking a local bus from either Chiang Saen or Mae Fah Luang to Sop Ruak. Buses run frequently, and the fare is usually around 30-50 THB. Once you arrive in Sop Ruak, disembark at the main bus station and head towards the riverfront. It is a short 10-minute walk. Head southeast on the main road until you see the Mekong River. The Ruak River is just a short distance along the riverbank.
Motorbike Taxi
If you’re in Sop Ruak and prefer a quicker option, you can hire a motorbike taxi. Simply ask locals where to find a motorbike taxi stand, and negotiate a fare (usually around 50-100 THB) to take you directly to the riverfront area. The ride should take about 5-10 minutes depending on traffic.
