Getting There

  • Car

    If you are starting your journey by car, drive to the town of Lukla, which is the closest airport to Everest Base Camp. Note that you can't drive directly to Base Camp due to the rugged terrain. From Kathmandu, it takes about 8 hours to drive to Jiri (the road is often winding and bumpy). From Jiri, take a local bus or hire a jeep to reach Lukla, which will take approximately 6-7 hours. Once in Lukla, hire a local guide or join a trekking group to hike to Base Camp, which will take about 10-14 days depending on your pace and acclimatization.

  • Public Transportation

    To reach Everest Base Camp via public transportation, first take a local bus from Kathmandu to Jiri. The bus ride takes about 8 hours. From Jiri, you will need to take a local jeep or bus to Lukla. This journey will take another 6-7 hours. Once you arrive in Lukla, you can either join a trekking group or hire a local guide for the trek to Base Camp. The trek from Lukla to Base Camp typically takes around 10-14 days. Be aware of the costs for public transportation, which can include bus fares and jeep rentals, totaling approximately $30-50 for the entire journey to Lukla.

    Once you are in Lukla, the trek to Everest Base Camp begins. Follow the well-marked trails through villages such as Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, and Gorak Shep before finally reaching Base Camp. The trek is challenging, so make sure to acclimatize properly along the way. It is advisable to hire a guide and/or porter, which can cost around $25-40 per day for a guide and around $15-25 per day for a porter.
