Car
If you're traveling by car, start from the nearest major city, which is Nepalgunj. From Nepalgunj, head north towards Juphal. The journey typically takes about 12-14 hours depending on road conditions. Upon reaching Juphal, park your vehicle at a local guesthouse or parking area. Juphal is the gateway to the Upper Dolpa Trek. Make sure to organize your trek permits and hire a local guide or porter if you haven't already.
Public Transportation
From Kathmandu, take a domestic flight to Nepalgunj. The flight lasts around 1.5 hours. Upon arriving in Nepalgunj, you can find local buses or shared jeeps heading to Juphal. The bus ride takes about 10-12 hours. Once you reach Juphal, proceed to arrange your permits for the Upper Dolpa Trek at the local office. It's advisable to book your transportation in advance, especially in peak trekking seasons.
Trek
From Juphal, begin your trek to the Upper Dolpa region. The trek typically starts with a trail leading towards Dunai, the district headquarters. The trek from Juphal to Dunai takes about 2-3 hours. From Dunai, continue onto Tarakot and then follow the trails to Saldang, which is part of the trek to Upper Dolpa. Make sure to follow the trail signs and consult with your guide for directions as you navigate the rugged terrain.
