Windmills and Countryside Private Tour

Beautiful Sites & Tired Feet!

We took the extended (7 hrs) Windmills & Countryside Tour: Zaanse Schans, Marken, Volendam & Edam. We booked the tour via Tours & Tickets for 55€/person. We checked in 30 minutes before the tour on the 2nd level of Amsterdam Centraal. The Staff were friendly and helpful. Our tour guide Luca and bus driver Caplan (not sure about the spelling) were great, too. They were personable and easy to talk to. Luca was especially patient with an entitled woman who complained about being rushed even though she and her daughter were late getting back to the bus at the windmill stop! She told him her daughter was going to write a bad review if they didn’t wait for them at future stops! It was insane to hear all that! Luca explained to her that part of our journey involved the ferry, which is public transportation. They don’t wait for anyone. Anyway, he was very professional in handling the situation. The windmills were great (1st stop). We got to hear from an operator and toured the inside of one of the windmills. I wish we were there a little longer. Marken was small, but pretty. We toured the wooden shoe factory, although it was more of a store with a demonstration room. It was still neat seeing how wooden shoes got made. The drive through the countryside was very pretty and peaceful. We took a ferry from Marken to Volendam where we visited a Gouda Cheese Factory. Again, it was a store with a presentation room downstairs. We did get to taste the different variety of Gouda cheese. We stopped in Volendam the longest - break for lunch. The hike from the harbor to the tour bus was quite long. Our last stop was Edam. Although it was a pretty little town, there wasn’t much to it. By the time we got there (after 6:00 pm), most stores were closed except for a tiny grocery store, an ice cream shop and a bar. The town is famous for their cheese. I’d definitely skip Edam. Anyhow, we were all super tired (lots of walking) by the time we drove back to Amsterdam. I’d definitely recommend the tour, but skip Edam.
