Getting There

• Car

  If you're starting from Reno, take US-395 South towards Gardnerville. Merge onto US-50 East toward Ely. Continue on US-50 for about 140 miles, passing through the small towns of Austin and Eureka. When you reach Austin, NV, look for signs directing you to the Toquima Caves. The caves are located along NV-116, approximately 8 miles south of Austin. Keep an eye out for parking areas near the caves, as they are often used by visitors.

• Car

  From Las Vegas, head north on I-15 and take the exit for US-93 North toward Ely. Continue on US-93 for about 180 miles until you reach the junction with US-50. Turn left onto US-50 East. Follow US-50 until you reach Austin, NV, where you will turn onto NV-116 South. The Toquima Caves are located approximately 8 miles down this road. Ensure you have a map or GPS, as cell service can be limited in this area.

• Public Transportation

  Using public transportation to reach the Toquima Caves is more challenging due to limited service. From Reno, you can take a Greyhound bus to Ely, which takes approximately 8 hours. From Ely, however, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service, as public transport does not have direct routes to Austin or the caves. Make sure to check the bus schedules ahead of time, as they may not run daily.

• Bicycle

  For the adventurous traveler, biking from nearby towns like Austin is a viable option. The ride from Austin to the caves is approximately 8 miles south along NV-116. Be prepared for varied terrain and ensure you have enough water and supplies. Always wear a helmet and be cautious of traffic, as this road may not have designated bike lanes.
