Car
If you are driving from Ruby Mountains, head southeast on Ruby Valley Road (NV-229) towards Spring Creek. Continue for about 25 miles until you reach the intersection with Lower South Fork Road. Turn left onto Lower South Fork Road and follow it for approximately 5 miles. The South Fork State Recreation Area will be on your left at 353 Lower South Fork Rd #8, Spring Creek, NV 89815.
Public Transportation
Public transportation options are limited in the Ruby Mountains area. The nearest major town with bus services is Elko, Nevada. From Elko, you can take a taxi or rideshare service to South Fork State Recreation Area. If you are using public transportation, you will need to first reach Elko from Ruby Mountains, which may require planning ahead. Once in Elko, arrange for a taxi to cover the approximately 30-mile distance to the recreation area.
Bicycle
For the adventurous, biking is an option. If you're near Ruby Mountains, you can cycle southeast on Ruby Valley Road (NV-229) towards Spring Creek. The route is scenic but be prepared for some elevation changes. It’s approximately a 30-mile ride, so ensure you're well-equipped with water and supplies. Lower South Fork Road will take you directly to the recreation area.
Walking/Hiking
If you're feeling particularly adventurous and are already in Ruby Mountains, consider hiking. However, this is not recommended unless you are an experienced hiker due to the distance. You would need to start on Ruby Valley Road (NV-229) and then connect to Lower South Fork Road. Be aware that this could take several hours and requires proper preparation, as well as knowledge of the trails and terrain. It's advisable to carry maps, water, and snacks.
