    If you are in Whangarei, start by getting onto State Highway 1 (SH1) heading north. Continue on SH1 for approximately 92 kilometers until you reach the town of Kawakawa. Here, take the exit onto State Highway 11 (SH11) towards Paihia. After about 25 kilometers, turn right onto State Highway 1 again and keep driving for another 60 kilometers. Then, take the exit towards SH12, which will lead you towards the Waipoua Forest. Follow the signs for Waipoua Forest, and after about 30 kilometers, you will see signs directing you to Te Matua Ngahere. There is parking available near the entrance of the walk.

  • Public Transportation

    From Whangarei, take the InterCity bus service heading towards Auckland. Inform the driver you want to get off at the turn-off to Waipoua Forest on State Highway 12, which is around 2 hours into the journey. Once you arrive at the turn-off, you may need to arrange a local taxi or shuttle service to take you to the Te Matua Ngahere entrance, which is approximately 10 kilometers from SH12.

    If you are in Kerikeri, head southwest on Kerikeri Road towards SH10. After about 12 kilometers, turn left onto SH10 and continue for approximately 30 kilometers. When you reach the intersection with SH1, turn right onto SH1 heading south. Drive for about 45 kilometers until you see the signs for SH12. Take the exit towards SH12 and follow the signs for Waipoua Forest. Drive for another 30 kilometers and you will reach Te Matua Ngahere.
