From New Plymouth, head south on State Highway 3. Continue for approximately 30 km until you reach the turn-off for State Highway 45. Take the exit and follow State Highway 45 towards Hāwera. As you approach Hāwera, look for the signs directing you to Ohangai. Follow the signs to Ohangai, and once you reach the township, look for the road marked 'Tangahoe Tunnel'. The tunnel is located a short distance from the main road and is easily accessible by car.

From New Plymouth, you can take a bus to Hāwera via the bus service operated by Tranzit Coachlines. The bus departs regularly from the central bus station. Once you arrive in Hāwera, you will need to hire a taxi or arrange for a rideshare service to reach Ohangai and the Tangahoe Tunnel, which is approximately 10 km from Hāwera.
