History of Downtown Akron

Akron’s Founding and Early Centre

Akron was founded in 1825 by General Simon Perkins and Paul Williams near the high ground between the Cuyahoga River and the planned Ohio & Erie Canal. The name, taken from the Greek word for a high place, reflected the settlement’s elevated position. The early town developed around what became its commercial centre, with Main Street and adjoining streets serving local merchants, workshops and public institutions. Although the original settlement was small, its position within the canal network gave it a stronger economic base than a purely agricultural village and established the downtown area as an important point of exchange in the emerging city.

The Canal and Commercial Growth

The Ohio & Erie Canal reached Akron in 1827, connecting the town northwards with Cleveland and Lake Erie before later extensions continued south. Its arrival brought warehouses, forwarding businesses, mills and traffic into the central district, while canal locks and related infrastructure shaped the local street pattern. Railways later reinforced Akron’s position as a regional trading centre and reduced the canal’s commercial importance. Downtown nevertheless retained the physical memory of this period in the canal corridor and in the concentration of commercial buildings that grew around Main Street, Market Street and nearby civic spaces.

The Rubber Capital Era

From the late nineteenth century, Akron’s economy was transformed by rubber manufacturing. B.F. Goodrich established operations in the city in 1869, Goodyear was founded there in 1898 and Firestone followed in 1900; General Tire also became a major Akron employer. Factory districts extended beyond downtown, but the central business area benefited from the companies’ offices, banks, hotels, shops and professional services. Workers and migrants arrived from across the United States and abroad, changing the city’s social landscape. Downtown became the public and commercial face of a manufacturing economy whose influence reached far beyond the neighbourhood.

Civic Architecture and Urban Change

The early twentieth century brought substantial civic and cultural investment to downtown. The Akron Civic Theatre opened in 1929 in the former Loewe’s theatre tradition and became a major performance venue, while commercial blocks and office buildings filled out the central streetscape. Later, suburban growth, changing retail patterns and industrial restructuring weakened downtown’s traditional economic role. Redevelopment projects, cultural institutions and event venues subsequently became important to its renewal.
