Discovering Lock 25: A Historical Gem on the Ohio & Erie Canal

Getting There

• Car

  If you're traveling by car, start by heading toward Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail in Akron, OH. For example, if you are in downtown Akron, take S Main St and head south. Continue on S Main St for about 1 mile, then turn left onto W Market St. Keep driving for another 1.5 miles and then turn right onto Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. There is no designated parking close to Lock 25, so you'll need to find a nearby street parking spot and walk approximately 10 minutes to reach the lock.

• Public Transportation

  If you prefer public transportation, you can catch a bus from downtown Akron. Look for the Summit County Transit buses that route towards the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. Board the bus and ride until you reach the stop closest to Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. From there, it will be a short walk to Lock 25. Be sure to check the bus schedule in advance, as service may vary, and ensure you have exact change or a transit pass, as there may be a small fare.

• Walking/Biking

  For those already near the canal or in the nearby areas, you can also walk or bike to Lock 25 directly. The Canal Towpath Trail is accessible for both pedestrians and cyclists. Ensure you have a map or a GPS-enabled device to guide you along the scenic route. The trail is well-marked and offers beautiful views along the canal. If you're biking, make sure your bike is in good condition, and wear a helmet for safety. The trail is approximately 5 miles long from the center of Akron, so plan accordingly for time and energy.
