Getting There

Car
If you're starting your journey in the city of Bend, head east on US-20 E for about 80 miles until you reach the town of Burns. From Burns, take US-395 N for approximately 30 miles, then turn left onto OR-78 W. Follow OR-78 W for about 40 miles until you reach the junction with US-97. Turn left onto US-97 S and follow it for about 25 miles until you reach the junction with OR-218. Take OR-218 E, which will lead you to the small town of Fossil. The Clarno Unit of John Day National Monument is located just a few miles west of Fossil. Look for the signs directing you to the monument.

Public Transportation + Car Rental
If you are arriving via public transportation, consider taking a bus to The Dalles. From The Dalles, you can rent a car at a local rental agency. Once you have your rental car, follow I-84 E until you reach Exit 104 for US-197 S. Take US-197 S until you reach the junction with US-97 S, and then follow the directions previously mentioned from Bend to reach the Clarno Unit in Fossil.

If you're coming from the east, such as from the town of John Day, take US-26 W until you reach the junction with US-97. Turn left onto US-97 S and follow the instructions above. Alternatively, you can take OR-19 N directly from John Day to Fossil, which will lead you through beautiful scenic routes.
