Car
If you're driving, head south on Highway 97 from any location in Wheeler County. Follow the signs for Wasco. After approximately 40 miles, take the exit toward Deschutes River State Recreation Area. Once you exit, turn right onto Deschutes River Road and continue for about 1 mile until you reach the entrance of the park. There is no entry fee required for the recreation area.
Public Transportation
For those relying on public transportation, you can catch a bus from the nearest city, The Dalles. The Columbia Gorge Express offers service to Wasco. Once in Wasco, you will need to arrange a taxi or rideshare service to reach the Deschutes River State Recreation Area, which is approximately 5 miles from the bus stop. Be sure to check the bus schedule in advance as services may be limited.
Biking
For adventurous travelers, biking is an option if you're staying nearby. Make sure to bring your bicycle. There are bike paths along Highway 97 that lead to Deschutes River State Recreation Area. It’s a scenic ride, but please wear a helmet and follow all traffic regulations.
