Car
From Makra Peak, head southeast on the main road towards Balakot. Continue driving for approximately 30 kilometers until you reach the town of Balakot. At Balakot, look for signs directing you toward the Kunhar River, which is often referred to as the 'Balakot River.' You will need to take the road that leads to Kawai and follow the river's course. This road is generally well-maintained and offers beautiful views. Look for local landmarks, such as the Kawai Bridge, which will indicate you are close to the river.
Public Transportation
If you prefer public transportation, you can take a van or bus from Makra Peak to Balakot. These buses regularly depart from the main bus stand in Makra Peak. The fare is typically around 200 PKR per person. Once you arrive in Balakot, you can hire a local taxi or rickshaw to take you the remaining distance to the Kunhar River. The taxi fare from Balakot to Kunhar River is usually around 500-700 PKR depending on negotiation, and it takes about 15-20 minutes to reach the river.
Hiking
For the more adventurous, you can hike down from Makra Peak to the Kunhar River. This route is not marked and requires a good sense of direction and physical fitness. Start by locating the nearest trail that leads down from the peak. Follow the natural terrain and keep an eye on the river valley to your left. This hike can take 2-3 hours, depending on your pace, and you will need to be cautious of the steep descents and rocky paths.
