Exploring the Majestic Shandur Pass: Gateway to the Mountains

Getting There

• Car

  From Phandar Valley, head towards the town of Mastuj. The road is generally in good condition but can be narrow and winding, so drive carefully. The distance to Mastuj is approximately 40 kilometers and will take about 1 to 1.5 hours depending on road conditions. Once you reach Mastuj, follow the signs towards Shandur Pass, which is about 30 kilometers away. This leg of the journey will take another 1 hour. The road to Shandur Pass is unpaved in some sections, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. Make sure to check for any road closures or conditions before starting your journey, as weather can affect accessibility.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Shandur Pass via public transportation, you will first need to take a local bus or shared taxi from Phandar Valley to Mastuj. Buses leave regularly, and the fare is usually around PKR 300-500. Once in Mastuj, you can hire a local jeep for the remaining 30 kilometers to Shandur Pass. The jeep ride will cost approximately PKR 2000-3000 and will take about 1 hour. Be sure to negotiate the fare beforehand and confirm that the driver is familiar with the route to Shandur Pass.

• Hiking

  For the adventurous, you can hike from Phandar Valley to Shandur Pass. This is a challenging trek and should only be attempted by experienced hikers. The hike is approximately 25 kilometers and can take 7-10 hours depending on your fitness level. Make sure to carry enough water, food supplies, and a map or GPS device to navigate your way. It is advisable to hire a local guide for safety and navigation assistance.
