Getting There

    Start your journey in Lae, the capital of Morobe Province. Head southwest on the Highlands Highway (also known as the Lae-Nadzab Road). After about 30 kilometers, you will reach the junction of the Markham Valley Road. Continue to follow the Highlands Highway for approximately 100 kilometers until you reach the town of Bulolo. There, you can refuel and gather supplies. From Bulolo, follow the road signs leading to Wau. The road can be rough, so drive carefully. After about 40 kilometers, you will arrive in Wau. Once in Wau, take the road towards Mt. Shungol, which is approximately 25 kilometers away. Parking may be available near the base of the mountain.

    From Lae, catch a bus heading towards Bulolo. These buses leave regularly from the main bus terminal. The fare is around PGK 15-20 and the journey takes about 2-3 hours. Upon reaching Bulolo, switch to a local bus or arrange for a taxi to Wau. The fare for this leg is approximately PGK 10-15. Once in Wau, look for a local guide or transportation service that can take you to the base of Mt. Shungol, which may cost an additional PGK 50-100 depending on group size.
