Overview

The Luís I Bridge stands as a magnificent emblem of Porto, drawing visitors from near and far with its striking iron architecture and panoramic vistas. Completed in 1886, this bridge is an engineering marvel, designed by the renowned Gustave Eiffel’s student, Théophile Seyrig. The bridge spans the Douro River, linking the historic city of Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia, and is particularly enchanting at sunset when the warm hues reflect off the water. Tourists can stroll across its upper deck for a bird's-eye view of the city’s colorful riverside buildings, bustling markets, and the serene flow of the river below. The lower deck, primarily used for vehicles and light rail, also offers a unique vantage point, allowing visitors to experience the bridge’s grandeur up close. As you walk along the bridge, take a moment to appreciate the intricate details of its design, from the ornate arches to the sturdy iron framework. The surrounding areas are filled with charming cafes, wine cellars, and local shops, perfect for immersing yourself in the culture of Porto.
