Car
If you are driving, start from the town of Hateg. Follow the DJ686 road towards Retezat National Park. After approximately 25 kilometers, you will reach the entrance of the park. Continue on the DN66A road until you reach the village of Nucșoara. From Nucșoara, take the unpaved forest road (marked for hikers) towards Tăul Ciumfu Mare. The drive will take about 1.5 hours in total, depending on road conditions.

Public Transportation
To reach Tăul Ciumfu Mare using public transport, take a train or bus to Hateg. From Hateg, take a local bus to Nucșoara. Once in Nucșoara, you will need to hike approximately 8 kilometers along the marked trail leading to Tăul Ciumfu Mare. Be sure to check local bus schedules as they may vary.

Once you arrive at Nucșoara, the hike to Tăul Ciumfu Mare is well marked. Start your trek from the village center, following the signs for the hiking trail. The trail is moderate in difficulty and will take about 2-3 hours to reach the lake. Bring plenty of water and snacks for the hike.
