Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you are driving, head towards the town of Borșa, which serves as the main access point to Varful Pietrosu. From Borșa, follow the signs for the DN18 road. Drive approximately 10 kilometers north until you reach the entrance to the Rodnei Mountains National Park. There is usually no entrance fee, but check for any updates on local regulations. Once inside the park, continue driving until you reach the parking area near the cable car station.
Public Transportation (Bus)
For those using public transportation, take a bus from major cities like Cluj-Napoca or Baia Mare to Borșa. The bus ride can take around 2 to 3 hours, depending on traffic and schedules. Once you arrive in Borșa, you can either walk or take a taxi to the cable car station. Ensure you check the bus schedules ahead of time and plan for the return trip as buses may not run late in the evening.
Cable Car
Once at the cable car station, purchase your ticket for the ride to the upper station. The cost is typically around 40 RON for a round trip. The cable car ride takes about 15 minutes and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. After disembarking at the upper station, you will find marked trails leading to Varful Pietrosu. Follow the signs for the hiking trail to the summit, which should take approximately 1 to 2 hours depending on your pace.
Hiking
For those who prefer a more adventurous route, you can hike directly from Borșa. This will take approximately 4 to 5 hours. Start at the center of Borșa and follow the marked hiking trails towards Varful Pietrosu. Ensure you carry enough water, snacks, and a good map or GPS device, as some areas may lack clear signage.
