Car
If you are traveling by car, head towards the Transfăgărășan road (DN7C), which is well-marked. From the city of Sibiu, take DN1 towards Râmnicu Vâlcea, then switch to DN7C. Follow the signs for Arefu. The journey takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Once you reach Arefu, look for the signs to Poenari Citadel. You will need to park in the designated parking area near the entrance.

Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, start by taking a train from Bucharest to Râmnicu Vâlcea. From Râmnicu Vâlcea, you can catch a bus (check schedules as they may vary) to the town of Arefu. Once in Arefu, you may need to take a taxi or walk to the citadel, which is approximately 3 km away from the bus stop. Make sure to check the bus schedules in advance, as they may have limited runs.

Hiking
If you are feeling adventurous, there is a hiking trail that leads up to Poenari Citadel. However, this requires you to first reach Arefu by car or public transport. The trail begins near the parking area and consists of 1,480 steps leading up to the citadel. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes and allow sufficient time for the hike, as it can take about 30 minutes to an hour depending on your fitness level.
