Derek Walcott Square: A Cultural Oasis in Castries

Getting There

• Walking

  If you are starting from the Castries Market, exit the market and head towards the main road (John Compton Highway). Turn left onto the highway, and walk straight for about 5 minutes. You will pass several local shops and cafes on your left. Continue walking until you see a roundabout ahead. At the roundabout, take the second exit onto Micoud Street. Keep walking for another 3 minutes, and you will see Derek Walcott Square on your right. The square is easily identifiable by its beautiful gardens and the iconic statue of Derek Walcott.

  If you are near the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, exit the cathedral and head towards the main road. Turn right onto St. Louis Street and walk straight for about 7 minutes. You will pass local shops and the vibrant atmosphere of Castries. As you approach the roundabout, take the first exit onto Micoud Street. Continue for about 2 minutes, and you will find Derek Walcott Square on your left. Look for the lush greenery and the welcoming benches where you can relax.

  From the National Museum of Saint Lucia, exit the museum and turn left onto the main street (Sir John Compton Highway). Walk straight for approximately 10 minutes, enjoying the view of the harbor on your left. When you reach the roundabout, take the first exit onto Micoud Street. After about 3 minutes, you will see Derek Walcott Square on your right. The square is a great place to unwind, with its beautiful landscaping and a perfect spot for photos.
