A Riverside Landing Place

The area now known as Lent developed beside the Drava, whose bank provided a natural point for landing, loading and movement through Maribor. The name Lent is generally linked to the German word Lände, referring to a landing place. Medieval urban growth concentrated activity along the river, connecting the settlement’s commercial life with routes across the surrounding region. Although Stara trta itself is named for the vine rather than an historic quarter, its position on Vojašniška ulica places it within this older riverside fabric, where trade, craft activity and movement on the water helped shape the streets and buildings.

The Old Vine is believed to have been planted in the late 16th century, when Maribor and the wider Štajerska region were established wine-growing areas. The vine is a blue-fruited variety known as žametovka or modra kavčina, and it continues to produce grapes under careful cultivation.
