History of Tezno

A Southeastern Rural Fringe

Before twentieth-century expansion transformed the area, Tezno formed part of Maribor’s southeastern outskirts, with a less urban character than the established centre north of the Drava. Its later development reflected the city’s outward growth and the increasing importance of road and rail connections across the Drava plain. Housing, workshops and service facilities gradually appeared alongside older routes and open land, producing the mixed residential and working environment that still distinguishes the district from Maribor’s historic core.

The Tezno Camp, 1943–1945

During the Second World War, the German occupation authorities established a forced-labour camp at Tezno in 1943. Prisoners were used in work connected with the wider industrial and military economy, and the camp formed part of the coercive system imposed on the occupied region. Its existence is now marked through the memorial landscape and historical interpretation associated with Tezno. The site is important because it connects the neighbourhood directly to the violence, forced labour and repression experienced in and around Maribor during the war.

Postwar Industry and TAM

After 1945, Tezno became strongly associated with large-scale industry, particularly the TAM vehicle works. Established in the postwar period, TAM grew into one of Yugoslavia’s major manufacturers of trucks, buses and related vehicles, bringing employment, technical skills and new housing demand to Maribor. The factory helped shape Tezno’s physical appearance and social identity, with extensive production grounds standing beside residential areas and transport routes. Even after the company’s decline and the fragmentation of its premises, the industrial legacy remains central to the neighbourhood’s story.

A Changing Industrial Landscape

The collapse and restructuring of TAM in the 1990s formed part of Slovenia’s wider transition from socialist industrial organisation to a market economy. Tezno did not cease to be a working district; former industrial land and buildings were adapted for smaller companies, logistics, workshops and commercial uses.
