A ravine shaped by water and industry

Enåns dalgång is a deeply incised valley where Enån has carved a narrow, rocky gorge through Dalarna’s forested terrain. The stream runs steadily through polished rock channels and small cascades, and for centuries its current powered a string of watermills; you can still find remnants of stone foundations and old channels half-hidden under moss and young trees. The combination of exposed bedrock, seepage springs and damp, sheltered pockets has created an environment with lush undergrowth and an unusually rich flora for the region.

The walking experience: routes and surfaces

Marked loops run from roughly 3.5 to 4.2 kilometres and are usually waymarked in orange; most describe a return route that brings you past the Slättberg bathing pond and the notable waterfall just upstream of it. Paths vary from firm forest tracks to root-strewn singletrack and wooden footbridges over wet sections; there are short stair runs in steeper places and occasional boggy stretches where planks have been laid. Expect uneven ground, narrow passages between rocks and fallen logs, and frequent stream crossings that make the route lively and tactile underfoot.

Plants, springs and microhabitats

The ravine’s cool, humid microclimate supports an array of shade-loving species: ferns, moss carpets, spring ephemerals and specialist plants such as skuggviol and thread horsetail thrive here. Cold groundwater springs emerge in several places and keep the soil damp, encouraging fungal diversity and lush groundcover. These microhabitats give the valley a feel of being slightly removed from the surrounding landscape — verdant, sheltered and often fragrant with resin and earth.

Traces of the past

Walking the valley you encounter tangible traces of former small-scale industry: foundations, channels and flattened areas where mills once stood. These archaeological features hint at a time when the river was intensively used to grind grain and drive simple local enterprises. Time and forest have softened these relics; they sit quietly beneath lichened stones and are a good reminder of how communities once read and used the river’s flow.

Sensory character and seasonal notes

In spring the ravine is loud with running water and the forest floor crowds with new life; summer brings dense, emerald shade and cooling breezes that make the trail a welcome escape on warmer days. Autumn colours light the slopes and mists can gather in the hollowed channel, while winter freezes the cascades into sculpted ice and renders the track quieter and more austere. Birdsong, the splash of water and the smell of wet humus and pine are constant companions.

Who uses the valley and how to treat it

Enåns dalgång suits day hikers, photographers and anyone interested in woodland botany or local history; parts of the route require sure-footedness and are less suitable for pushchairs or mobility aids. The valley is a natural area where small fragile habitats persist; visitors are encouraged to keep to marked paths, avoid trampling sensitive vegetation and take all litter away with them so the ruins and plant communities remain undisturbed for others to discover.
