Snäckgärdsporten was constructed in the closing years of the 13th century as one of the older gate towers in Visby’s medieval ring wall. Over time it has carried several names — among them Västerport and Odeport — reflecting shifting local usage and the gate’s changing role as a town exit toward the fields and coastline. The present name refers to the Snäckgärdet area outside the wall and situates the gate in the larger coastal landscape that once defined Visby’s maritime connections.

The gate is built in thick, weathered limestone and assembled in the same robust masonry sequence as the adjacent Silverhättan tower. Its passage and flanking tower spaces show the defensive thinking of a Hanseatic-era port town: narrow openings for observation, heavy stonework to resist attack and evidence of modifications from later centuries. The tower above the portal was fitted with wooden floors and internal stairs in a recent conservation intervention, letting visitors experience the layered vertical interior without altering the gate’s external silhouette.

A connecting walkway from Silverhättan provides access to the gate’s internal lookout levels, a modern insertion designed to be discreet from the outside while restoring a historic function: survey and panorama. From the top levels you gain framed vistas over the Nordergravar trenches, the low gardens and the shifting roofs of Visby, with glimpses of open sea to the north. The lookout emphasizes the gate’s dual character as both fortification and viewpoint, a place where defensive control and everyday urban life meet.

Like many parts of the ringmur, Snäckgärdsporten has a varied biography: once blocked and partly sealed during the 18th century, it later hosted seasonal uses, including a 19th‑century period when visitors sat in the portal area to take refreshments while enjoying the sea view. Archaeological traces and historic maps reveal earlier double-portal arrangements and the footprint of the older curtain wall that predated the gate, underlining the long sequence of building, decay and rebuilding that characterises Visby’s walls.

Under your hand the limestone is cool and pitted from centuries of weather; hinges, recesses and the uneven cobbles of the approach remind you that this is a working edge between town and landscape. Sound carries differently here — cawing gulls, wind through the trenches and the shuff of footsteps in the narrow passage. Outside the gate the defensive ditch and green embankments form a muted buffer to the town; inside, the clustered timber roofs and narrow streets offer the intimacy of the medieval core.
