Foundations of Sustainable Living

Suderbyn Ecovillage emerged in 2008 when Ingrid Gustafsson and Robert Hall purchased an old farm in Västerhejde, Gotland. After years in international development across South Asia, Middle America, and Eastern Europe, they sought stability while embracing diversity and ecological principles. This site, across from an inactive military area, became a hub for permaculture practices and community experimentation. The ecovillage quickly evolved into a pilot for regenerative society, emphasizing self-reliance in food, energy, and waste management.

Permaculture Paradise and Food Systems

At Suderbyn's heart lies Sweden's largest permaculture forest and food garden, a perennial expanse of edible plants maintained by residents. Communal meals, prepared daily with one or two cooks and featuring a Sunday pancake brunch, rely on organic, local, seasonal, and Fairtrade ingredients—all vegan. Personal food purchases align with ecological standards, supporting the closed-loop ethos where waste feeds back into the system through innovative technologies.

Closed-Loop Innovations

NGO Relearn drives key projects like the Closed Loop system: a geodesic dome greenhouse with low-impact heating, energy, insulation, ventilation, and rainwater collection; a biogas digester producing cooking fuel twice daily; and an aeroponics setup growing plants in mist without soil. Wind power and biogas heating further enhance self-sufficiency. These elements demonstrate practical sustainability, from wastewater treatment to energy production, in a holistic design process.

Community Dynamics and Global Ties

Hosting 12 permanent residents and 8-20 temporaries from around the world, Suderbyn fosters skills in ecobuilding, organic farming, administration, and leadership. Partnerships with the European Solidarity Corps and Service Civil International bring volunteers, while networks like the Ecovillage Association of Sweden and Baltic Ecovillage Network amplify its influence. A guidance manual for closed-loop systems aids other projects, underscoring Suderbyn's role in transition movements.

Visitor Immersion and Events

Guided tours reveal the ecovillage's history, organization, and permaculture in action—1-hour walks or 2-hour sessions with fika. Events like the No More War Festival have drawn crowds, blending social projects with environmentalism. Though semi-rural beside Gotland's main road, the site balances natural beauty with accessibility, urging biodegradable products to protect its water systems.

Regenerative Vision on Gotland

Nestled on Gotland, a Baltic pilot for Sweden's energy transition, Suderbyn prototypes alternative lifestyles amid regional initiatives. Plans for a production kitchen and Visby café using onsite vegan produce aim for economic viability and workshops. This ecovillage stands as an educational beacon, proving small-scale, creative sustainability respects nature and community alike.
