In the mid-19th century, Jönköping faced the urgent need for a reliable water supply amid cholera epidemics sweeping Western Europe. Planning began in the 1850s but stalled due to costs, only to revive in the 1860s under more favorable conditions. By 1864, a water treatment plant complete with reservoirs, filtration systems, and ponds was constructed on land from the Åsen farm, southwest of town. Water drawn from the Junebäcken stream was purified and piped to households, industries, fire hydrants, and water taps, dramatically improving sanitation and safety.

The park's centerpiece includes three infiltration ponds dating to 1865, each equipped with fountains that spray water year-round powered by natural groundwater pressure. These incisions, 10-200 meters long, 1-3 meters wide, and up to 0.8 meters deep, appear most dramatically on steeper slopes like deep ditches.
