In the mid-19th century, Jönköping faced the urgent need for a reliable water supply amid cholera epidemics sweeping Western Europe. Planning began in the 1850s but stalled due to costs, only to revive in the 1860s under more favorable conditions. By 1864, a water treatment plant complete with reservoirs, filtration systems, and ponds was constructed on land from the Åsen farm, southwest of town. Water drawn from the Junebäcken stream was purified and piped to households, industries, fire hydrants, and water taps, dramatically improving sanitation and safety.

The park's centerpiece includes three infiltration ponds dating to 1865, each equipped with fountains that spray water year-round powered by natural groundwater pressure. These structures not only served practical purposes but also created an aesthetically pleasing environment that drew townspeople for leisure visits. The high-level reservoir once pressurized the city's supply, its remnants now integrated into the landscape as a testament to early industrial ingenuity.

Winding north from the waterworks past the Åsen reservoir into the forest reveals an extensive network of sunken lanes, or holloways—over 800 meters of ancient roads and bridlepaths etched into the earth since at least the Middle Ages. These incisions, 10-200 meters long, 1-3 meters wide, and up to 0.8 meters deep, appear most dramatically on steeper slopes like deep ditches. Multiple parallel lanes in places hint at heavy historical traffic, possibly along trade routes such as Nissastigen connecting Jönköping to Halmstad.

Spanning roughly 200 hectares, the park offers varied terrain from gentle pond-side paths to forested slopes rising 244 vertical feet. Singletrack trails cater to mountain bikers with blue-rated family-friendly routes totaling about 3 miles, including downhill sections with moderate physical demands. Hikers and trail runners explore loops of 3.8-6.4 km, while a prominent rock climbing crag provides bolted sport routes amid granite faces.

Mixed woodlands, open meadows, and water features support a rich ecosystem, with birdsong echoing through canopies and wildflowers blooming along trails in summer. Winter brings frost-laced ponds and snow-dusted holloways, transforming the space into a quiet wonderland. The park's proximity to the city allows easy escapes into nature, where the air carries scents of pine and damp earth year-round.
