Origins and design character

Kalmar stadspark was created in the late 19th century and remade in a romantic English‑style layout, combining carefully composed sightlines with informal plantings and open lawns. Mature trees and layered shrubs frame the park’s promenades, while winding paths reveal small rooms — shaded glades, sunlit flowerbeds and a reflective pond — that give the park a sense of discovery throughout the year.

Relationship with the castle and waterfront

The park’s most arresting quality is its setting: tucked against Kalmar Castle and the edge of Slottsfjärden, the park offers continuous glimpses of the castle’s silhouette and the channel beyond. Low terraces and raised lawns direct views toward the water, so many of the park’s benches and lawns become comfortable vantage points for watching tide light, passing boats and changing skies.

Planting mixes locally hardy perennial borders with a number of more exotic specimen trees — magnolias, bamboo stands and ornamental walnut are all part of the composition — giving seasonal interest from spring bulbs through autumn leaf colour. Sculptures punctuate the lawns and ponds; a notable fountain figure decorates one of the park’s small pools and several commemorative busts mark benefactors of the park’s early development.
