Origins and artistic concept

Bureplatsen was conceived as a landscape-art intervention that transformed a formerly marginal slope on Norra Stadsberget into a purposeful public place. Designed in collaboration with landscape architects and artists, the project reshaped earth and introduced a bold circular concrete platform that reads like a sculptural stage against the hillside. The intervention deliberately contrasts raw concrete with softened terraces of soil and planting, creating a dialogue between human-made geometry and the existing topography.

Physical form and notable features

The most recognisable element is the large round plaza — a flat, bench-like concrete disc that functions as a lookout and gathering surface. Around it, the terrain has been modelled into stepped grassy terraces and gentle berms that channel movement and frame sightlines down into the valley and over the stream below. Path surfaces are simple and durable; planting is restrained, emphasising form and seasonality rather than dense ornamentation.

Sensory experience on site

On approach the place reads as sculptural and minimal: the concrete’s cool grey and the curve of the platform catch light differently through the day. Wind carries the colder, resinous scent of nearby pines in cooler months and the sweet hay-like tang of mown grass in summer. From the platform, you can hear the distant hum of the town below and, depending on wind direction, bird song from the adjacent trees. The experience alternates between openness on the disc and sheltered calm within the terraced hollows.

Use and atmosphere

Bureplatsen works as an intimate venue for small performances, community gatherings and quiet contemplation rather than as a busy recreational park. The round concrete plaza naturally organises small audiences and provides clear sightlines for informal concerts or spoken-word events. At other times it offers a place to sit and take in the panorama or to pause during a longer walk around Norra Stadsberget.

Landscape thinking and craftsmanship

The design demonstrates careful earthmoving and a sculptural approach to municipal landscape work: large-scale grading, retaining edges and a single, dominant concrete gesture yield an economical yet intentional composition. Materials are deliberately honest — exposed concrete, cut turf edges and pragmatic surfacing — which gives the place a restrained, contemporary character while handling the durability requirements of a public setting.

Context within Sundsvall’s green spaces

Perched above parts of the town, Bureplatsen extends the network of green vantage points on Norra Stadsberget and links sculptural design to everyday urban nature. It offers a compact, design-led stop within a broader wooded ridge: a place where civic landscape, art and viewpoint converge to offer a distinctive, quietly formal moment in Sundsvall’s collection of outdoor spaces.
