Gäddeholm fågeltorn sits within the Gäddeholm cultural reserve, an estate landscape that retains its parkland character and lakeside marshes from earlier centuries. The towers were added in the 2010–2012 period as part of a programme to increase low-impact visitor facilities across the reserve, and they were conceived as lightweight, steel-and-timber structures that blend with the shoreline vegetation while offering protected observation points above the reedbeds.

Design, accessibility and materials

The towers were developed from a small catalogue of site‑furniture prototypes created for the reserve: simple frames, timber cladding and restrained colour choices that reference local history without heavy foundations. Two towers stand along the shore, each with sheltered viewing apertures and floor levels arranged to accommodate seated and standing watchers; at least one was built with wheelchair access in mind so the experience is inclusive and practical for a broad range of visitors.

The wetlands, seasons and birdlife to expect

From the blind you look across a mosaic of open water and reed fringes where ducks, geese, waders and passerines use the shallows seasonally. Spring and autumn migration are lively periods when passage species move along the Mälaren shoreline, and breeding seasons concentrate nesting waterfowl and reed-associated birds in the marshes. Winter days present a quieter, sculptural scene of bare reeds, pale light and flocks gathered on open water.

Sensory character and visitor moments

The experience at the towers is intimate: the soft rustle of reed stems, a distant line of wings, the metallic scent of cold water and the occasional plop of a diving duck. The shelters give respite from weather and a quiet frame for watching — small apertures turn sweeping views into staged compositions, useful for photography, sketching or slow observation. On still mornings the water mirrors sky and reed silhouettes; in windier weather the reedbeds ripple and birds ride the thermals.

Conservation setting and site etiquette

The towers are placed to concentrate observation while protecting sensitive parts of the marsh: path and hide locations follow a low-impact principle that avoids trampling the breeding flats. Within the cultural reserve there are clear restrictions to protect nesting birds — the towers and marked access routes are the authorised ways to view the wetlands during breeding season. The structures themselves were designed to minimise ground disturbance during construction.
