Origins Amid Umeå's Growth

In 1865, as Umeå emerged as a burgeoning town in northern Sweden, preparations began for its first public park. Governor Erik Viktor Almquist donated the land south of the Ume River, envisioning an English-style garden for residents. Winding gravel paths, arbours, viewpoints, and vibrant flower beds took shape between Östra Kyrkogatan, Storgatan, and Östra Strandgatan, transforming the area into Stadsträdgården—a vital communal breath in the wooded north.

The park's name shifted in 1867 with the unveiling of a monument to General Georg Carl von Döbeln, the celebrated figure from Sweden's Finnish War campaigns.
