Stornäset Travel Guide

Stornäset occupies a long, low-lying headland where post‑glacial land uplift and coastal processes have created long shallow beaches, sand spits and mosaic strandängar. The changeable shoreline and underlying calcareous bedrock make for a mix of habitats — open grassland kept short by grazing, muddy flats, shallow bays and internal alder swamp — each revealing different textures and colours through the seasons.

The open strandängar and long, shallow tidal shelves turn Stornäset into a vital resting and feeding ground for migratory waterfowl and waders. In spring and autumn the flats host waves of ducks and shorebirds that pause to refuel on invertebrates and seeds; in summer parts of the reserve are also important for breeding species. A sequence of habitats from reed edges to exposed sandbars gives visiting birds options for shelter and foraging.

Behind the beaches there are species-rich meadow strips and a patchwork of willow, alder and mixed deciduous patches where damp soils and lime‑rich conditions support a floristic variety not always obvious from the shore. Coastal plants adapted to salt spray and shifting sands live alongside species that favour calcareous wet ground; the result is a botanically layered reserve with pockets of uncommon or locally notable species.

Stornäset is protected to conserve its coastal meadows, feeding grounds and the species they support. Ongoing measures — such as continued grazing, sensitive maintenance of paths and protection of nesting and resting areas — aim to preserve the mosaic of habitats that make the headland ecologically valuable while allowing people to experience its birds, beaches and quiet vistas.
