MFO Park is a public urban park in Zurich-Nord, built on the site of the former Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon works. Opened in 2002, it is best understood as contemporary landscape architecture rather than a traditional park. The centrepiece is a tall, open steel structure planted with climbing greenery, forming a kind of walk-through park-house with stairs, seating ledges, loggias and an upper viewing deck.The result is compact but memorable: part shelter, part sculpture, part public room. It is one of Zurich’s clearest examples of industrial land being turned into usable green space without erasing the site’s past.

The setting is urban and close to the grain of Oerlikon, with buildings, rail infrastructure and streets around it rather than open nature. That contrast is part of the appeal. Inside the structure, the steel frame and dense planting create a cool, layered space that feels calmer than the district outside. Light filters through the framework, and the upper level gives a modest but useful outlook over the neighbourhood.This is not a place for long walks or big scenic drama. It works as a pause point: somewhere to sit, read, wait for a train connection, or spend half an hour away from the street. In warm weather it fills with people lingering on benches and steps; in colder or wetter conditions it becomes a quicker stop.

Most visitors come here to walk through the structure, climb the stairs, sit for a while, and take photos of the steel-and-vegetation contrast. The park suits casual city walkers, design-minded travellers, couples, solo visitors and families looking for an easy stop with little planning required. The experience is straightforward and physical without being demanding.A typical visit is short to moderate. You may spend 15 to 30 minutes if you are simply passing through, or closer to an hour if you linger on the upper deck or combine the park with a walk around Neu-Oerlikon. Seasonal events such as open-air cinema or concerts can extend the visit, but the everyday use is quiet and informal.

Access is easy by public transport, with Zurich Oerlikon the most practical arrival point and a short walk from there. The site is flat and urban, so it is also realistic to reach by bicycle. Driving is possible, but transit is usually simpler in this district. The park itself is free to enter and generally open as a public space, though event setups can change the atmosphere.Weather matters. Clear, mild days show the planting and structure at their best, while rain, wind and winter cold reduce the appeal of lingering. Even so, the park remains a useful stop year-round because its main draw is the architecture itself: a rare public space that feels both engineered and green.
