Blatterwiese is a public lakeside meadow in Zürich’s right-bank park belt, commonly called Chinawiese because it sits next to the Chinagarten. It is an urban recreation space rather than a designed garden: a wide expanse of grass, lakeshore paths, scattered trees, and family facilities arranged around direct access to Lake Zürich. The place is part of a long-developed waterfront landscape, shaped by more than a century of shoreline planning and public use.

The atmosphere is open, informal, and local. On a fine day the lawn fills with people lying in the sun, eating picnic lunches, or pausing on a lakeside walk. Children use the playground, cyclists pass through, and joggers keep to the paths. There is little sense of enclosure or ceremony; the appeal lies in the space itself, the water, and the ease of staying as long or as briefly as you like. It can feel lively without becoming hectic, though weekends and warm evenings bring the most activity.

Travellers visit Blatterwiese for a simple waterfront break in the city. It works well for a short stop during a lakeside stroll, but it also supports longer, low-key visits if you want to sit on the grass, read, picnic, or watch the lake traffic. The playground makes it especially practical for families, while the flat terrain and broad paths suit casual walkers, older visitors, and anyone wanting an unforced outdoor pause close to central Zürich. The nearby Chinagarten adds a cultural contrast, but the meadow itself remains the main draw.

The site sits within Zürich’s historic right-bank lakeshore landscape and has been used for major public events in the past, including the 1939 national exhibition and the 1959 horticultural exhibition. The area also has an older industrial layer: it was once the site of a silk dye works. Today that history is mostly visible in the broader park structure rather than in any surviving buildings. What remains most obvious is the setting: a flat, spacious green edge to the lake, with city infrastructure close by and long views over the water.

Blatterwiese is free to enter and easy to reach by public transport, on foot, or by bike. Facilities are basic but useful, with a playground and barrier-free WC access confirmed, plus nearby cafés and grill areas in the wider park zone. It is best in warm, clear weather, when the grass is used for picnics and sunbathing; rain, wind, and cold quickly reduce its appeal. This is not a destination for structured sightseeing, but for travellers who want a straightforward, well-located place to spend time outdoors beside the lake, it fits neatly into a Zürich day.
