The square itself is open, flat and largely outdoors, with the lake providing the main visual relief.

It is one of the easiest places in central Zürich to reach the lake, and it offers a quick transition from Bahnhofstrasse to the promenade without any complicated navigation. It is also a practical starting point for lake cruises and a common place to meet before walking along the water. Photographers come for the combination of open square, tram movement and lake backdrop; others come simply to orient themselves before heading on.

How a visit unfolds

A typical visit is brief. You arrive by tram or on foot, cross the square, and either continue straight to the lakeside or pause for a few minutes to take in the view. If the market is operating, the area around Stadthausanlage adds stalls and a little more texture to the scene. In warm weather, people tend to drift toward the promenade and the water’s edge; in colder months, the square is more often a transit point with little reason to stay long. A realistic stop lasts 10 to 20 minutes, though combining it with a lakeside walk or boat departure can stretch the visit to an hour or more.

Practical expectations

Bürkliplatz is easy to reach and easy to use. Public transport is the most efficient option, and the area is flat enough for comfortable walking and cycling. Facilities are basic but useful, with public toilets and nearby food or kiosk options in the wider square area. Seating and shelter may be limited, so weather matters. The square is free to enter and works best as part of a larger route through central Zürich rather than as a standalone attraction.
