Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car from Katavi Plains, head north on the main road towards Ikuu. Continue for about 30 kilometers until you reach the sign for Katavi National Park. Follow the dirt road signs leading into the park entrance. Be prepared for some rough terrain; a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. As you approach the park, you will need to pay a park entrance fee, which is typically around $30 per person. Make sure to have cash available in Tanzanian Shillings.

• Public Transportation (Matatu)

  To reach Katavi National Park via public transportation, hop on a matatu (shared taxi) from the nearest town in Katavi Plains. Look for a matatu heading towards Ikuu; these are often found at local bus stations. The fare will cost approximately 2,000 TZS per person. Once you arrive in Ikuu, you can either walk or take a local taxi to the park entrance, which is about 10 kilometers away. Ensure you have cash for the park entrance fee, as mentioned earlier.

• Walking

  If you find yourself close to the entrance of Katavi National Park and prefer to walk, you can take a scenic route through the surrounding landscape. Walking from Ikuu to the park entrance will take about 2 hours. Be cautious of wildlife and carry sufficient water. Also, ensure you have your entrance fee ready as you will need to pay upon arrival at the park gate.

• Taxi

  For a more comfortable option, you can hire a taxi from your location in Katavi Plains directly to the entrance of Katavi National Park. The cost for a taxi ride will vary, but you can expect to pay around 50,000 TZS. Confirm the fare before starting your journey and ensure that the taxi driver is familiar with the route to the park.
