If you are starting from the downtown Franklin area, begin at the Franklin Square (the intersection of 3rd Avenue South and Main Street). Head south on 3rd Avenue South, which will turn into Columbia Avenue (US-31). Continue walking straight for about 0.5 miles. The Carter House will be on your right at 1140 Columbia Ave. Look for the historical marker in front of the house.

From the downtown Franklin area, find the nearest Franklin Transit stop. Board the Franklin Transit Bus Route 1 heading towards the Cool Springs area. Stay on the bus for approximately 10 minutes until you reach the stop at Columbia Avenue. Disembark and walk north for about 0.2 miles on Columbia Avenue. The Carter House will be on your left at 1140 Columbia Ave.
