A Planned Hillside Suburb

Streetcar-Era West El Paso

Kern Place’s growth formed part of a wider westward movement in El Paso encouraged by improved roads and streetcar-era connections. Residential development in this part of the city attracted households seeking detached homes, more generous street settings and proximity to the expanding west side. The neighbourhood was never an industrial quarter; its defining land use was residential, supported by small local services and access to central El Paso. The surviving mixture of older houses, later additions and mature landscaping records the gradual rather than single-phase development of the community.

The University and the Foothills

The establishment and growth of the University of Texas at El Paso, originally founded as the State School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1914, altered Kern Place’s surroundings without erasing its residential character.
