Footdee’s history stretches back to medieval times, with the first recorded mention in 1398. Originally known as Futty, the village was a remote fishing settlement clustered around St Clement’s Church on the north side of the River Dee estuary. The name Footdee likely derives from the ‘foot of the Dee’ river, though it is also linked to St Fittick, a local saint believed to have landed nearby in the 7th century. The village’s close ties to the sea shaped its identity, with fishing, whale processing, and ropeworks forming the backbone of its economy for centuries.

In 1809, Aberdeen architect John Smith designed the modern village to rehouse fishermen from deteriorating harbour slums. His plan featured 28 uniform, single-storey thatched cottages arranged in two squares—North Square and South Square—facing inward with their backs turned to the sea to shield residents from harsh storms. Additional housing areas, Middle Row and Pilot Square, were added in the mid-19th century to accommodate a growing population. Later, some cottages were raised to two storeys to ease overcrowding. The village’s unique layout and architecture reflect practical needs and a strong sense of community.

Despite industrial changes and urban expansion, Footdee has retained a vibrant community ethos. The village’s squares foster close-knit neighbourly bonds, with shared spaces and communal sheds opposite each home. The North Square Mission Hall, known locally as ‘the schoolie,’ remains a hub for social and religious gatherings.
