Union Terrace Gardens opened to the public in August 1879, transforming 18th-century linen bleaching grounds into a municipal pleasure garden. Designed by architect James Matthews, the gardens occupy a natural river valley formed by the Den Burn, which now flows underground. The site was carefully landscaped with ornamental planting, bandstands, and recreational spaces, quickly becoming a cherished urban retreat. Victorian-era features such as ornate cast iron fences, gazebos, and balustraded stairwells remain integral to its character.

The distinctive arcade arches along Union Terrace, designed by Matthews, incorporate stones from the 18th-century Bow Brig, linking the gardens to the city’s layered history. By the mid-20th century, the gardens had become a symbol of Aberdeen’s horticultural pride, regularly contributing to Britain in Bloom awards. The grass suffered damage from large events, and the dense tree cover created secluded areas that attracted illicit activity. The gardens’ reputation suffered nationally, prompting calls for revitalization and sensitive redevelopment to restore safety and public enjoyment.

Modern Redevelopment and Renewal

After decades of debate and proposals, a major £28.3 million redevelopment was completed in 2022 by LDA Design and Stallan-Brand Architecture + Design. This project carefully balanced heritage conservation with modern needs, restoring Victorian features such as railings and arches while introducing accessible pathways, terracing, and new landscaping. Three elegant pavilion structures, inspired by historic city trams, now house a café, restaurant, and wine bar, activating the space year-round. Enhanced lighting and event spaces have transformed the gardens into a welcoming, vibrant civic hub.

Significance and Awards

The revitalized Union Terrace Gardens has been widely acclaimed, winning the 2025 Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award. The project is celebrated for its architectural integrity, sensitive restoration, and creation of an inclusive public realm. It stands as a testament to civic endurance and thoughtful urban design, reconnecting Aberdeen’s residents and visitors with a treasured green space at the city’s core.
