History and Heritage

Tucked away in the ancient village of Moulin, just east of Pitlochry, the Moulin Brewery occupies a building that once served as the coach house and stables for the Pitlochry to Kirkmichael coach service. Revived in 1995 to mark the Moulin Inn's 300th anniversary, it honors the village's brewing past from the early 19th century. The inn itself, dating to 1695, stands as the oldest part of the Moulin Hotel, a C-listed structure full of character with traditional furnishings and two roaring log fires.

Brewing Process and Ales

Using all-natural ingredients like malted barleys, milled wheat, and hops, the brewery produces four regular beers: Ale of Atholl, Braveheart, Light Ale, and Remy (with honey). The process begins in the mash tun at precisely 68°C, followed by boiling in the copper and fermentation at 27°C. Most production is enjoyed across the road at the inn, with bottles available locally. Free tours run daily from 10am to 4pm, showcasing this 10-barrel plant, one of Scotland's first microbreweries.

The Inn Experience

The Moulin Inn offers a welcoming pub atmosphere with home-prepared local dishes, from full breakfasts to evening meals. Outdoor seating enhances summer visits, while the cozy interior suits Highland winters. It's a hub for locals and visitors, ideal after hikes like Ben Vrackie, accessible directly from the village.

Surrounding Village and Activities

Moulin, with Bronze Age roots and a medieval heritage centre in the old kirk, provides a peaceful contrast to bustling Pitlochry, just a short walk away. Nearby attractions include distilleries, waterfalls, and trails in the Perthshire Highlands, making it a perfect base for exploring.

Practical Details

Open weekdays 10am-4pm (tours and visits), the brewery pairs seamlessly with inn hours extending into evenings. Free parking and proximity to walks add convenience for day trippers.
