Dunkeld Cathedral occupies a site of Christian worship dating back over 1,400 years, when Celtic monks established a mission at the confluence of the Rivers Tay and Braan. In 849, King Kenneth MacAlpin brought St Columba's relics from Iona to Dunkeld, making it the ecclesiastical center of united Picts and Scots. The present structure began in the 13th century, evolving over 250 years with Gothic and Norman elements.

The cathedral suffered damage during the 1560 Reformation, leaving the nave roofless and in ruins under Historic Environment Scotland care. The choir, completed around 1350 and restored in 1907, functions as Dunkeld's parish church with regular Sunday services from Easter to Remembrance Sunday. The 1469 tower, once an ecclesiastical court, bears faint 16th-century paintings of biblical judgments.

The 15th-century chapter house houses a free museum displaying Pictish stones, medieval grave slabs, and relics tracing the site's history. Notable memorials include the tomb of the Wolf of Badenoch (Alexander Stewart), Scottish Horse Regimental honors, and Black Watch colors. Leaflets in multiple languages guide visitors through these treasures.

The cathedral's woodland setting on the River Tay offers tranquil benches, ancient twisted trees, and the Parent Larch from 1738, seed source for Atholl's vast plantations. Spot red squirrels amid well-maintained lawns stretching to the water's edge. Summer brings handbell ringers and a music festival with free concerts from May to September.

Open year-round: April-September 9:30am-5:30pm (last entry 5pm), October-March 10am-4pm (last entry 3:30pm), closed Christmas and New Year. Grounds always accessible; note occasional nave/tower closures for safety. Free admission, with nearby parking and village cafes.
