The River & Rowing Museum, located in the picturesque town of Henley-on-Thames, was established in 1998 to honor the history and culture of rowing along the River Thames and beyond. It explored rowing from ancient origins through to the modern Olympic Games, with a special focus on Henley’s own rowing traditions. The museum’s collection included over 35,000 items such as historic rowing boats, trophies, medals, and memorabilia, alongside engaging displays that narrated the evolution of the sport and its social significance.

The museum was housed in a large, barn-like structure that stood out architecturally in Henley. This spacious design allowed for expansive galleries and large exhibits but also contributed to high running costs that ultimately impacted the museum’s sustainability. Situated near the Thames Path and within walking distance from Henley town center and the train station, the museum’s location was both scenic and convenient for visitors exploring the riverside town.

Visitors enjoyed a well-curated experience with interactive and family-friendly exhibits. Highlights included the story of journalists covering the famous Boat Race using a unique pneumatic tube system, and the popular 'Wind in the Willows' audio tour that brought literary and river lore to life. The museum also featured a cafe and event spaces, making it a pleasant spot for both education and leisure.

Despite its cultural significance and positive reception, the River & Rowing Museum faced ongoing financial difficulties exacerbated by the large size of its building and rising maintenance costs. After a period of refurbishment and reopening in mid-2023, the museum announced its permanent closure to the public on 21 September 2025. The trustees expressed a commitment to ethical management of the collection and are exploring future options for the building and the museum’s legacy.

Though the physical museum is closed, its educational mission persists through workshops and outreach programs designed for schools and communities. These initiatives ensure that the story of the Thames, rowing, and Henley’s heritage continues to be shared in new and evolving ways, keeping the spirit of the museum alive beyond its original site.
