The artwork’s granite and concrete surface is inscribed with over 160,000 letters, ranging from tiny to nearly a meter tall, allowing visitors to appreciate the humor both up close and from a distance.

Gordon Young drew inspiration from Blackpool’s historic architecture and the interior grandeur of the Blackpool Tower, particularly its ornate Viennese ballroom and Art Nouveau features. The Comedy Carpet reflects this ‘over-the-top’ style in an outdoor setting, combining high craftsmanship with a playful celebration of comedy’s place in British culture. The typography and layout were expertly designed by Andy Altmann of Why Not Associates, ensuring the piece is both visually striking and easy to explore.

Names of both living and deceased comedians, including Victoria Wood and Norman Wisdom, are woven seamlessly into the design.
