The Comedy Carpet Travel Guide

The Comedy Carpet is one of the largest pieces of public art commissioned in the UK, covering approximately 2,200 square meters on Blackpool’s Tower Festival Headland. Created by artist Gordon Young in collaboration with Why Not Associates, it celebrates the rich heritage of British comedy by immortalizing jokes, catchphrases, and songs from more than 1,000 comedians and writers. The artwork’s granite and concrete surface is inscribed with over 160,000 letters, ranging from tiny to nearly a meter tall, allowing visitors to appreciate the humor both up close and from a distance.

Gordon Young drew inspiration from Blackpool’s historic architecture and the interior grandeur of the Blackpool Tower, particularly its ornate Viennese ballroom and Art Nouveau features. The Comedy Carpet reflects this ‘over-the-top’ style in an outdoor setting, combining high craftsmanship with a playful celebration of comedy’s place in British culture. The typography and layout were expertly designed by Andy Altmann of Why Not Associates, ensuring the piece is both visually striking and easy to explore.

Visitors journey through comedy’s past as they stroll across the carpet, encountering tributes to legendary performers from music hall stars to contemporary comedians. The northern section highlights northern British icons such as Monty Python and The Two Ronnies. The artwork also includes memorial elements, like a tribute to Spike Milligan’s famous gravestone joke, blending humor with homage. Names of both living and deceased comedians, including Victoria Wood and Norman Wisdom, are woven seamlessly into the design.

Situated directly opposite the iconic Blackpool Tower, the Comedy Carpet anchors the Tower Festival Headland, a vibrant events space that hosts festivals and celebrations throughout the year. The carpet not only honors comedic talent but also serves as an outdoor stage for entertainment, reinforcing Blackpool’s long-standing reputation as a national hub for performance and laughter.
