An Art Deco Gem in the Heart of Bath

The Forum was designed by architect A.S. Gray and opened its doors in 1934 as Bath’s last 'Super Cinema.' Its striking Art Deco façade, complete with magnificent pillars and a canopied entrance, hints at the architectural treasures inside. Originally built to seat 2,000 patrons, the venue offered luxurious escapism during the Great Depression, becoming a social hub for cinema-goers amid challenging times. The building’s interior retains many original features, including marble floors and staircases, which bear subtle marks from nearby WWII bombings, adding layers of historical character.

Evolution from Cinema to Premier Music Venue

After closing as a cinema in 1969 due to declining audiences, The Forum adapted through various uses including a bingo hall and dancing school. In 1988, it was acquired by Bath Christian Trust and became home to Life Church Bath. The building’s Grade II* listing protected its unique Art Deco features from major alteration, preserving its historic integrity. Since 2001, extensive renovations have enhanced the stage, lighting, and acoustics, transforming The Forum into one of the South West’s largest and most versatile live music venues with a 1,600-seat auditorium.

A Hub for Culture, Community, and Education

The Forum hosts hundreds of events annually, ranging from internationally acclaimed musicians and comedy shows to orchestral concerts and community gatherings. It serves as a cultural bridge, offering internships and work experience to Bath Spa University students, and supports a variety of student-led events. The venue also holds university graduations and fosters collaboration across artistic disciplines, enriching Bath’s creative landscape.

    Architectural and Acoustic Excellence

The venue’s auditorium is celebrated for its excellent acoustics, ideal for orchestral and choral performances as well as amplified music. The Art Deco interior exudes elegance and grandeur, providing an immersive audience experience. Recent refurbishments have included a catering kitchen, office spaces, and restoration of original features like the lift and adjacent shops, blending modern functionality with historic charm.

    Celebrating a Storied Legacy

The Forum marked its 90th anniversary with special events showcasing its rich history through exhibitions, backstage tours, and live performances. It remains a vibrant cultural landmark, hosting renowned artists across genres including pop, rock, folk, and classical music. The venue’s resilience and ongoing evolution underscore its importance as a treasured heritage site and dynamic entertainment space.

    Visitor Experience and Atmosphere

Visitors to The Forum can expect a spacious, elegant setting with a lively yet refined atmosphere. The venue’s blend of historic architecture and contemporary performances creates a unique experience where past and present converge. Whether attending a concert, comedy night, or community event, guests enjoy a welcoming environment that celebrates Bath’s cultural vitality.
