First recorded in 1205, the present structure dates mainly from 1478 to 1519 with the tower completed in 1608. It served as the main gathering place for the University of Cambridge until the Senate House opened opposite in 1730. The building houses the University Organ and the original Cambridge Chimes that later influenced Big Ben. It remains the official university church, hosting sermons and events while functioning as an active parish church.

The large parish church features a west tower, nave with galleries, chancel and side chapels in Late Perpendicular Gothic style.
