Queens' College, Cambridge Travel Guide

Queens' College was established in 1448 by Margaret of Anjou on the site of an earlier hostel, then refounded in 1465 by Elizabeth Woodville after the Wars of the Roses. The original Old Court formed one of the earliest complete medieval college complexes in Cambridge. Later additions include Walnut Tree Court from 1616 and 20th-century Cripps Court, while the core fabric from the 15th century remains intact. Erasmus studied here in the early 16th century.

The college sits on both banks of the River Cam, connected by the Mathematical Bridge. Enclosed courts such as Old Court and Cloister Court open onto lawns and the Grove. The riverside frontage and garden areas create a contained, walkable environment that mixes medieval brick buildings with later structures. Most visitor time is spent outdoors moving between these spaces.

Entry occurs at the Visitors' Gate on Queens' Lane. Walks proceed through the courts to the Mathematical Bridge and riverside paths. The Chapel and Old Hall open when not in use for events. No guided tours are offered for individuals. Visits last 45 to 60 minutes on average, with visitors expected to stay off grass and river banks. The working college setting keeps noise low and behaviour formal.

The site lies 0.5 miles from central Cambridge, reachable in five to ten minutes on foot or by the Universal bus stopping on Silver Street. Cycling is common. Wheelchair users enter via the Porters' Lodge with ramps to ground-floor areas, though the Mathematical Bridge ramps are steep at 1-in-5. Some uneven historic surfaces and steps remain. Parking is permit-only and restricted by a bus gate.

Entry costs £5 for adults, with children under 12 free. The Visitors' Shop sells souvenirs at the gate. Accessible toilets are available, one requiring a RADAR key from the Porters' Lodge. No food or drink is sold on site for general visitors. The college closes during examinations from mid-April to early July, Christmas, and for private functions; dates must be checked in advance.
